Film Noir

Film noir is a retrospectively defined genre   referring mainly to American detective, gangster, or gothic romance films made in the 1940s and 1950s that have a cynical, pessimistic, and existentialist undertone. Although some scholars argue that noir is a style or a period of film-making instead of a genre, there are distinct iconographies that are associated with film noir, which include guns, cigarettes, alcohols, cars, crimes, police, etc. The protagonist of a noir story is often morally questionable and is often faced with a difficult choice. The genre is also know for its distinct style of cinematography with high-contrast lighting and shots that are distant from the characters with large proportions of the periphery. Some later films that intentionally alude to the film noir style are sometimes referred to as neo-noir, which encompasses an even greater variety in their contents.
